Chantix is a prescription medicine, manufactured and distributed by the pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, which is used to help smokers end their nicotine addiction.

In November 2007, the FDA announced it had received reports that patients using Chantix for smoking cessation had experienced several serious symptoms, including thoughts of suicide and occasional suicidal behavior, erratic behavior, and drowsiness.

On February 1, 2008 the FDA issued an Alert to further clarify its findings, noting that "it appears increasingly likely that there is an association between Chantix and serious neuropsychiatric symptoms."  In particular, the Alert reads:

Serious neuropsychiatric symptoms have occurred in patients taking Chantix. These symptoms include changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and attempted and completed suicide. While some patients may have experienced these types of symptoms and events as a result of nicotine withdrawal, some patients taking Chantix who experienced serious neuropsychiatric symptoms and events had not yet discontinued smoking. In most cases, neuropsychiatric symptoms developed during Chantix treatment, but in others, symptoms developed following withdrawal of Chantix therapy.

A clinical study released by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices in May 2008 cited “adverse events” associated with Chantix, including hundreds of accidents ranging from slip and falls to traffic accidents caused by loss of consciousness, dizziness, confusion, and muscle spasms. The side effects of Chantix include the following:

- Depressive behavior
- Possible increased risk of suicide
- Suicidal thoughts

If you are taking Chantix, it is important to monitor your behavior and watch out for these dangerous side effects: feelings of extreme depression and anxiety, thoughts of suicide, hallucinations, and abusive behavior.
