Ephedra in Dexatrim & Herbal Life Products - PAH & PPH

Ephedra (Ma Huang) can cause Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH).  Scientific studies have found an association with ephedrine alkaloids from dietary, nutritional and herbal supplements to Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH).

When Dexatrim was first produced, its active ingredient was a chemical called phenylpropanalomine (PPA). In the 1990s, Dexatrim replaced PPA with Ephedra, which can cause primary pulmonary hypertension. Because of serious health risks, Ephedra was banned by the FDA in 2004.

Ephedra is a naturally-occurring plant derivative, which has been used in supplements for weight loss, performance enhancement and increased energy. Supplements containing ephedra have been linked to heart attack, stroke, psychiatric problems and death.

In 2003, the FDA issued a consumer alert advising the public to stop using products containing ephedra because they present a high risk of injury or death.

Because Ephedra-based products are not "drugs" as defined by the Food and Drug Administration, the government historically has not been involved in the regulation of the manufacture or sale of Ephedra-based products. Tens of hundreds of weight loss and athletic performance enhancing products manufactured and marketed in the last decade have been Ephedra-based.

Thousands of adverse reactions were reported to the FDA relating to Ephedra use. Ephedra use has been linked with serious side effects including: stroke, heart attack, hypertension, tachycardia, and death. Before being banned on April 12, 2004, Ephedra was used in over-the-counter weight loss supplements and athletic enhancers.

Notably, Ephedra was used in products such as: Metabolife 356, Xenadrine RFA-1, Stacker 2, Hydroxycut, Metaboless, Metabolift, Metabolite, Ripped Fuel and Herbalife.

If you or someone in your family suffered one of the injuries described above while taking Ephedra as a part of an over-the-counter weight reduction program or for athletic enhancement purposes, you may be entitled to a substantial recovery.
