Testosterone Therapy

In the last several years, there has been a boom in the use of testosterone drugs for men purportedly suffering from low testosterone, or “Low T” as it is commonly known.  Drug companies have aggressively marketed testosterone drugs to men, especially baby boomers, as a miracle drug that reverses the effects of aging and loss of sex drive.

Because of this aggressive marketing, almost 3% of men in the United States over 40 use Low T drugs.  Most general practitioners prescribe Low T drugs without doing any diagnostic tests to determine whether the man is even suffering from low testosterone, otherwise known as, hypogonadism.  In fact, as men age, a decrease in testosterone is natural.

Testosterone drugs have become a multibillion-dollar industry.  Low T drugs are now more popular than Viagra.  But lost in the pharmaceutical companies’ promotion of testosterone drugs are the very serious risks of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and death associated with the use of these drugs.

Testosterone Side Effects

In November 2013, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that men who use testosterone drugs are 30 percent more likely to suffer a stroke, heart attack, or death. A 2014 medical study conducted by researchers from UCLA and the U.S. National Cancer Institute found that men older than 65 years of age were found to have a doubling of the risk of a heart attack within ninety days of beginning testosterone therapy.  This study also found that younger man with a history of heart disease had a two- to three-fold risk of having a heart attack within 90 days of Low T treatment.

A meta-analysis of nearly 3,000 men in 27 non-industry funded studies found that Low T drugs doubled the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular injuries.  Pharmaceutical companies claim that there is no increased risk of cardiovascular injuries.

Other side effects of taking testosterone include:

  • High cholesterol
  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Blocked Arteries
  • Diabetes
    Obesity

FDA Safety Alert for Testosterone

On January 31, 2014, the FDA issued an alert announcing that it was going to investigate the risk of stroke, heart attack and death in men taking FDA-approved testosterone drugs due to the release of studies (cited above) that suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular events for men taking Low T drugs.  In the alert, the FDA advised doctors to “consider whether the benefits of FDA-approved testosterone treatment are likely to exceed the potential risks of treatment.”

FDA adds Warning to Testosterone Drugs about Blood Clots

On June 19, 2014, the FDA is requiring manufacturers of testosterone drugs to include a general warning in the drug labeling about the increased risks of dangerous venous blood clots.  The FDA also stated that “because these clots occur in the veins, this new warning is not related to FDA’s ongoing evaluation of the possible risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in patients taking testosterone products.”
